Monk’s Cabin

Small Structures - 2008 - Cavan, Ontario

Built originally for a monk visiting from Thailand, the Kuti (Thai for cabin) has been a retreat for a buddhist couple ever since. Its small size, the wood stove, the straw bale walls, the wood ceiling and floor, and the view through the large windows make it an inviting and relaxing get-a-way to a field in Cavan, Ontario. Bolted to huge rocks that sit on a rubble trench foundation this is our only concrete free foundation. Concrete is carbon intensive and responsible for roughly 7% of all global green house gas emissions. We design foundations that use it conservatively and avoid it when possible.
